“When you are called to do something out of the ordinary, not everybody will understand.  Here’s the key: the dream in your heart may be bigger than the environment that you are in.  Sometimes you have got to get out of that environment in order to see that dream fulfilled.  It is like an oak tree.  If you plant it in a pot, it can only grow so big.  Once its roots fill that pot, it is going to quit growing.  The problem is not with the tree, the problem is with the environment it is in.  It is stifling its growth.

They may reject you.  They may criticize.  But really life is way too short to live it just trying to please everybody.  Life is too short to go around worried about what people are going to think.  Some of my father’s life long friends started talking about him, judging him.  And really they weren’t bad people, they just didn’t understand.  He knew the best thing for him to do was to just move on.  And so he left that place, hurt and dejected.  He could have allowed that one negative experience to poison the rest of His future.  He could have gotten bitter, angry, going around blaming God and blaming people.  Do you know what my father did?  He basically just shook it off.  He accepted the fact that not everybody was going to understand.  He recognized the dream in his heart was bigger than the environment.  He went down the street to an abandoned feed store and started Lakewood.  That was on Mother’s Day in 1959 and we have been going strong ever since then.”
