God’s Audible Voice
GOD’S AUDIBLE VOICE
There are three types of hearing God’s audible voice:
1. Spiritual inner audible
2. Literal outer audible
3. God’s thundering voice
SPIRITUAL INNER AUDIBLE
Hearing God’s inner audible voice is not at all like His still small voice. Rather it is VERY loud and impacting. This can cause the whole insides of a person to shake. And it is a very powerful experience. The only reason I call it inner audible is because I have been in rooms where this has happened, and no one else hears it! Here I am being undone, and they don’t have a clue! Smile. I have heard Him speak this way several times, and it is quite loud, with definite emotion, and it sounds like it is outside the ear, but it really is not. Contrary to His still small voice, His inner audible voice has pitch, timber, emotion and decibels.
In the cases below, Ezekiel and John were in the Spirit when they heard these loud voices. They heard them with their spiritual ears.
Ezekiel 3:12 Then the spirit took me up, and I heard behind me a voice of a loud rumbling, saying, Blessed be the glory of the LORD from his place.
Revelation 5:2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the scroll, and to loose the seals thereof?
One example that comes to mind is a good one for several reasons. First, it proves that we can hear the Lord even when we are not at rest, not quiet and are not pausing! I was “cosmic bowling” with my son and a group of teens one night. The bowling pins and our clothes glowed in the dark from ultraviolet lights, the strobe lights were flashing, and circling rainbow strobes were filtering through a layer of “fog” over the area. Of course, this was all really neat — except for the blaring stereo speakers directly behind me! My innards were shaking from the sound and I could hardly believe I used to dance to this kind of noise when I was a teen!
As I was getting ready for my turn to bowl, I heard the Lord say very loud, (it’s a good thing He did!) on the inside of my thoughts, “Chosen one.” It was so out of character for where I was that I laughed out loud (not that anyone could have heard me!) I immediately remembered the scripture that says: “I can never be lost to your Spirit! I can never get away from my God! If I go up to heaven, you are there; it I go down to the place of the dead, you are there.” (Psalm 139: 7-8 TLB) As I thought of that verse, laughingly I said back to Him, “Lord even in here You are with me!”
Another time I was in a very noisy and busy restaurant, and the Lord came to me and put me in a bubble. I could see the people talking to one another around the table, and I watched their lips move, but I could not hear them speak. Then I heard the Lord’s BOOMING voice say to me, “I WILL NEVER, NEVER LEAVE YOU OR FORSAKE YOU!”
Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD your God, he it is that does go with you; he will not fail you, nor forsake you.
I have had many experiences when the Lord has opened my spiritual ears while I am hearing Him. I heard canning jars moving around on shelves, when He was talking to me about journaling and preserving His Words for another generation.
Another time the Lord opened my ears and I literally heard the shouts of a crowd chanting Glory! Glory! Glory! Glory! [These shouts were punctuated in 2 syllables: Glor – ee! Glor – ee! Glor – ee! Glor – ee!] Then I heard His still small voice say, “How much is supernatural? All of it.”
I have heard door bells, phones, train whistles, angels singing, and other experiences, all within the context of the Words the Lord was speaking to me.
HIS AUDIBLE VOICE
Job was speaking to the Lord, “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You.” (Job 42:5 NKJV)
In the same manner of literal seeing, it is possible to hear His audible voice, angelic voices, heavenly music, etc. through our literal ears. When Saul was on the way to Damascus, he suddenly heard a voice but saw no one. Those who traveled with him also literally heard the voice, but saw no man.
Acts 9:4-7 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? 5 And he said, Who are you, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom you persecute: it is hard for you to kick against the goads. 6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what will you have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told you what you must do. 7 And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.
One time the Lord opened my ears and I heard a beautiful and LOUD trumpet fanfare. When it finished, I saw a vision of the heavens open and heard and saw His rain pour in a mighty gush. He gave that to me in context to a promise of His rains coming. (The pouring out of His Spirit, as in Joel 2.)
One early morning, I heard the Lord ask me in His still small voice, “How may I help you?” And then He opened my ears and I literally heard a man’s voice standing at the foot of my bed, and He said, “Good Morning!” His voice was SO cheerful and had been waiting for me to stir awake so that we could commune together. That experience was a precious one. He said that He lived inside of me and waited every day to commune with me. It was so precious. When I heard His literal voice, Oh He was SO cheerful! He had such anticipation and excitement as He had waited for me to stir awake.
One time Anna and a friend were worshipping the Lord while traveling. Afterwards they sat in silence basking in the Lord’s Presence. Both of them suddenly heard a heavenly choir. Each thought the other had turned on a cassette tape.
Another time Anna was driving late at night after a storm and as she rounded a blind corner, she heard a voice YELL in her ear, “SLOW DOWN!” She slammed on her brakes and suddenly a huge tree loomed across the road. She had slowed just enough to swerve on to the shoulder and miss it.

HIS THUNDERING VOICE
John 12:28-31 NKJV
Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake.
One night I had a series of events take place. I had been thinking about Annie’s Vision where He dwells in His cloud, directly over earth and the people do not know He is so near. As I was going to bed, Wayne said to me, “Fear not, God is with you.” That was a very strange thing for him to say to me, as I was not feeling afraid of anything, and I am rarely afraid. Wayne has never said this to me before in our 27 years of marriage!
At 10:00 PM Wayne saw a huge lightning flash light up his window. Then the thunder immediately boomed directly on top of our house for a long 5 to 10 seconds without stopping. When it happened, he felt that it was significant, and not just a natural event. He also felt it was for my benefit, although he didn’t know why. He said it was only one very lengthy thundering, not a series building up to it, as in coming closer, and a series going away. There was only one flash and one thunder and it was all directly above our roof. It was extremely LOUD.
I was sound asleep at 10 o’ clock. I was dreaming and had just asked the Father in my dream, “What do YOU think about that?” (There was an emphasis on the Word You.) Immediately I heard a very HUGE, loud thunderous sound. It was like someone had spoken a sentence with words that were made from one long sonic boom, but with various degrees of emphasis within the boom! It was directly over my head and the whole atmosphere was filled with this sound and permeated my bedroom. I was very frightened. My heart was beating very fast as I awoke praying out loud, “In Jesus Name, in Jesus Name, in Jesus Name!!” I leaped out of bed and ran over to the window to see what had made that sound. I looked out the window and all was totally still. The rain finally came and I knew it must have been thunder.
I grew up among thunder storms; I knew this was very, very different. There was no thunder building up to it nor was there thunder leaving in the distance. I asked the Lord if this could possibly have been His voice answering me in a cloud directly above, for deep in my heart I knew I had heard the Heavenly Father. The Holy Spirit immediately brought back to memory that His voice sounds like thunder, and also that before bed I had been thinking about Annie’s vision where He was directly overhead. I was convinced the Father was there and He had answered my question.
I was totally undone by this experience. I kept saying to the Lord, “You are so awesome and I am so puny!” “You are so awesome and I am so puny!” I was overwhelmed by the awesomeness of God.
Job 37:1-5 NKJV
“At this also my heart trembles, and leaps from its place. Hear attentively the thunder of His voice, And the rumbling that comes from His mouth. He sends it forth under the whole heaven, His lightning to the ends of the earth. After it a voice roars; He thunders with His majestic voice, and He does not restrain them when His voice is heard. God thunders marvelously with His voice; He does great things which we cannot comprehend.
WORD TO PONDER: VISITATION FROM YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER
I have given you these glimpses of My thunder and power so that when I visit you, you shall understand. I AM coming in My thunder and power. My people have become acquainted with their Savior, Jesus Christ. They have become acquainted with their Helper, the Holy Spirit. They have yet to know their Heavenly Father. As I descend into their midst, their very beings shall rock and quake with the intensity of My tangible touch.
This night I, your Father, have visited you in My glory cloud directly over your head. You have heard My thunderous voice. Mark it well, for when you ask of Me, I answer. I come when you know it not, and I descend upon you when you least expect it. Remember every little thought you think is recorded and I listen. My voice is mighty and it shakes the very core of your humanity, and yet even in that, I tenderly listen to every care and whim of your heart. Tell My people that your Father is awesome and fearful, and very tender to those whose hearts are turned toward Him.
2 Samuel 22:14 The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.
Job 37:5 God thunders marvellously with his voice; great things does he, which we cannot comprehend.
