ABSTAIN FROM THE APPEARANCE OF EVIL
3/06/23 ABSTAIN FROM THE APPEARANCE OF EVIL
This week I studied the following scripture and was very shocked. Obviously the word appearance means something seen or viewed. But I did not realize that the word evil means HURTFUL. That very word sheds light on this question: What are you looking at and listening to? How are you treating others in your words, thoughts and deeds?
1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
EVIL = HURTFUL
Strong’s Greek Dictionary
πονηρός poneros (ponērós)
Search for G4190 in KJVSL; in KJV; load in ESI.
πονηρός ponērós, pon-ay-ros’
from a derivative of G4192; hurtful, i.e. evil (properly, in effect or influence, and thus differing from G2556, which refers rather to essential character, as well as from G4550, which indicates degeneracy from original virtue); figuratively, calamitous; also (passively) ill, i.e. diseased; but especially (morally) culpable, i.e. derelict, vicious, facinorous; neuter (singular) mischief, malice, or (plural) guilt; masculine (singular) the devil, or (plural) sinners:—bad, evil, grievous, harm, lewd, malicious, wicked(-ness). See also G4191.
Instead we are to prove all things and hold onto what is good. What are you looking at and listening to that is beautiful? What are you thinking, saying and doing that is beautiful?
1 Thessalonians 5:21 Test all things; hold fast that which is good.
GOOD = BEAUTIFUL
Strong’s Greek Dictionary
καλός kalos (kalós)
Search for G2570 in KJVSL; in KJV; load in ESI.
καλός kalós, kal-os’
of uncertain affinity; properly, beautiful, but chiefly (figuratively) good (literally or morally), i.e. valuable or virtuous (for appearance or use, and thus distinguished from G18, which is properly intrinsic):—× better, fair, good(-ly), honest, meet, well, worthy.
