WHEN LAYING HANDS ON THE SICK

7/07/26 WHEN LAYING HANDS ON THE SICK

When we are on prayer teams or doing street evangelism, part of what we do is lay hands on the sick.

Mark 16:15-18 And he said unto them, Go you into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believes not shall be condemned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

The following scriptures are examples that are quickened to me about praying for the sick:

  • Instant healing
  • Progressive healing
  • Praying more than one time
  • Someone’s faith can draw healing
  • Unbelief can hinder healing
  • Deliverance can bring healing
  • Healing kept if they sinned no more
  • Some sickness not caused by sin
  • Confession of sin can bring healing

INSTANT HEALING

Matthew 8:14-16 And when Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother lying sick of a fever. 15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. 16 When the evening came, they brought unto him many that were possessed with demons: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

PROGRESSIVE HEALING: JESUS LAID HANDS ON THE MAN TWICE

Mark 8:22-25 And he came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. 23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw anything. 24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. 25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.

PROGRESSIVE: MAN HAD TO DIP 7 TIMES

2 Kings 5:10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall come again to you, and you shall be clean.

PROGRESSIVE: HEALED AS THEY WENT

Luke 17:12-16 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, who stood afar off: 13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Teacher, have mercy on us. 14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go show yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

A PERSON’S FAITH CAN DRAW OUT HEALING VIRTUE FROM YOU

Mark 5:26-34 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse, 27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the crowd behind, and touched his garment. 28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. 29 And immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that disease. 30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that power had gone out of him, turned about in the crowd, and said, Who touched my clothes? 31 And his disciples said unto him, You see the multitude thronging you, and you say, Who touched me? 32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. 34 And he said unto her, Daughter, your faith has made you whole; go in peace, and be whole of your disease.

HEALING AT A DISTANCE

Matthew 8:13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go your way; and as you have believed, so be it done unto you. And his servant was healed in the same hour.

UNBELIEF HINDERS HEALING

Matthew 13:58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

Mark 6:5-6 And he could there do no mighty work, except that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. 6 And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

PETER THREW OUT THE UNBELIEVERS

Acts 9:39-40 Peter got up and went with them. When he had come, they brought him into the upper chamber. All the widows stood by him weeping, and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them. 40 Peter put them all out, and kneeled down and prayed. Turning to the body, he said, “Tabitha, get up!” She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up.

DELIVERANCE FROM A DEMON CAN RID A DISEASE

Matthew 17:18 Jesus rebuked him, the demon went out of him, and the boy was cured from that hour.

SIN CAN OPEN THE DOOR TO DISEASE

John 5:14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, you are made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto you.

NOT ALL SICKNESS IS CAUSED BY SIN

John 9:1-3 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man who was blind from his birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Teacher, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3 Jesus answered, Neither has this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

CONFESSION OF SIN CAN BRING HEALING

James 5:14-16 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall deliver the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

UPDATE READER QUESTION:  Someone asked me what about the scripture regarding laying on of hands suddenly and partaking of their sins?

1 Timothy 5:22 Lay hands hastily on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep yourself pure.

I did research and most commentators say that in context to the surrounding passages, that scripture is about laying hands on someone to install them into ministry.

I believe this is a warning about promoting someone into ministry before their time.  It is such a snare when people’s gifts are exalted over their character.  When the Lord said, MANY are called but few are chosen, He meant that yes I call many, but only a few of those are chosen after they are called.  The space inbetween the calling and the choosing is TIME.  We must not promote giftedness before its time.  That is God’s job.

Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
