Adams Second Chance

(Text Version)

ADAM AND THE SECOND ADAM

I was the very first man on the earth.  When God created me, He formed me out of clay and then breathed His breath into me.  God called me Adam.

Then God planted a beautiful garden with many beautiful plants and trees.  There were many kinds of delicious fruit trees in that garden.  There was a river that flowed through garden and watered it.  God asked me to take care of the garden.

He called the animals and birds to come to me and told me to give them names.  Giraffe!  Lion!  Penguin!  Lamb!  Cow!  Every type of animal came to me.  I watched them and decided what their name would be.  From then on they would always be called by those names.

Even though I had the animals as my friends and I could talk to them, I was still lonely and needed a helper.  So God put me to sleep and I had a dream.  I dreamed that God opened me up and took one of my ribs and then made Eve, the very first lady.

When I woke up I was very excited I saw her and the dream really happened.  I said, “She is from my bones and flesh!  I shall call her woman, because she was taken out of man.”  She became my helper and I taught her everything God had told me before she was made.

I explained that God told me I could eat from all the trees in this beautiful garden – But I could not eat from the tree in the very center.  He called it the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil. He warned me that if I eat that fruit I would surely die.

One day the serpent came to trick Eve.  The serpent asked her a trick question, “Did God really say you cant eat of any tree in this garden?” Eve told him what I taught her, that God said we could eat from all the trees except the one in the center and we would die if we ate from it.

“You won’t die! God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

Eve saw that the tree looked really beautiful and delicious and so she ate.  Then Eve gave one to me.  Immediately our eyes were opened and we saw that we had no clothes on.  We covered ourselves with fig leaves.

We heard God walking in the garden and we hid from Him.  God called out, “Adam where are you?”

“I heard You walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.”

“Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I warned you not to eat?”

“Yes Eve gave me the fruit and I ate it.”

Then the LORD God asked “Eve, What have you done?”

Eve said, “The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”

God punished Adam and Eve and even the serpent.  He sent them away from the garden and put one of His cherubim angels there to guard the garden so they would not return there.  Adam lost the beautiful ability to walk and talk with God in that garden and because of his sin, that door closed to all future people too.

The Bible says that God was so sad about this, that He sent Jesus His son to the earth and called Jesus His second Adam.  Jesus was called this because God wanted to give man a second chance.  People were very mean to Jesus and killed him.  But God knew this ahead of time and planned that Jesus’ death would pay the price for the punishment from Adam’s sin.  When people believe that Jesus did this for them, they can have the same wonderful relationship with God that Adam had in the garden before he sinned.

Thank You Jesus for paying for us to have a second chance with our Creator, Daddy God!
